Rosewood gentleman's dressing case

Rosewood dressing case with brass embellishments, Mr Person engraved on the lid. Circa 1844.
This example, although without a manufacturer’s plaque or retailer’s identification is undoubtedly by a good (probably London) maker, consolidating the requirements of the 19th century gentleman traveller/ military officer in the field, while additionally and importantly, emblematic of the owner’s status.
The upper level contents: free standing mirror, soap dish (hallmarked 1844, ‘FD’- Frances Douglas * ), faceted powder jar (1844, ‘W N’ – William Neal, Clerkenwell , London), encased shaving brush (1844 ‘WN′), cologne bottle, a pair of ink bottles, faceted hair pomade jar (1844), the lid only from what would have been an identical jar, in this instance for tooth powder (1844, ‘FD’ ), aerated toothbrush container (1841, ‘FD’ ), velvet needle case with a leaf of buttons, small rectangular rosewood box, and Mechi’s Magic Strop, with satinwood handle. All items of silver bear the crest of the owner: Raptor grasping a sprig of foliage in its beak.
The spring activated lower drawer can only be accessed when the lid is unlocked and lifted. Pushing the front of the drawer releases its brass locking rod. To reset the catch the drawer is closed, held in position, and the locking rod depressed with finger pressure.
The lower level contents: Ivory page turner/letter opener decorated with scallops, two small blades concealed in the handle (stamped ‘VR London’), steel nail file with cuticle scraper, steel scissors, corkscrew with gun barrel sheath, steel tweezers, one Champion razor, one steel boot pull, the handle of which ends in a button hook.
The case is accompanied by part of its original protective leather box.
*’the mark of Mrs Frances Douglas has been noted on many silver mounts to the bottles in dressing cases, including one, London. 1848/50, retailed by Charles Asprey, 166 New Bond Street’… John Culme : The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths.
